제목을 쓰고 보니 ‘답정너’ 경우 같다. 현재 미국에서 가장 인기 있는 전공은 컴퓨터 사이언스 관련 학과다. 이유는 물론 학부 졸업 (Bachelor’s degree) 만으로도 취업이 잘 되고 고소득 직종이므로. 하지만 누구나 컴퓨터사이언스를 전공하지않으며 그래서도 안되는 것이므로 비싼 등록금때문에 빚을 지고 사립대 문을 나선 다양한 전공의 학사학위 소지자들의 중간 소득(Median Earnings)을 알아보았다. 기준은 졸업 후 1년이며 대상 학교들은 아이비리그+MIT, CalTech을 제외한 주요 사립 대학들이다.

역시나 컴퓨터 사이언스의 초초강세. 노스웨스턴 대학에서 전공자가 가장 많은 경제학 Economics은 $69,200이 중간 수입이었다. 출처는 연방정부 교육부 자료이며 학생들의 학비 빚을 상환하는 금액을 기초해서 산정했다고 한다. 존스홉킨스 대학의 컴퓨터 사이언스 전공자들 68명의 학비융자 총액의 중간 금액은 $12,821이며 소득은 $92,700. 월급 $7,725 에서 매달 133달러씩(median monthly loan payment) 페이먼트를 하는 것으로 조사되었다.
위 자료를 보면서 같은 전공이지만 학교에따라 수입의 차이가 나타나서 몇몇 학교들의 전공별 중간 수입만 조금 더 찾아 보았다. 학교 선택시 참고가 될 것 같다.
